Discover the old province of Aunis

Discover Aunis, a region which calls out to holidaymakers looking to relax.

Aunis, north of the Charente area, is an ideal place to relax, close to major tourist sites. Surgères is one of the gateways from which to access the Marais Poitevin.

Located in the northwest of the department of Charente-Maritime, Aunis is a region of natural landscapes. It is bordered to the north by the Marais Poitevin, to the east by the Saintonge and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.

Discover exceptional architectural sites, with a rich cultural heritage.

Take a stroll through the historic centre of Surgères and discover the medieval walls of Surgères, home to the Church of Our Lady and the remains of the great Château Seigneurial, which dates to the 12th century. The whole forms an architectural ensemble, full of history, located in a large park with old trees.

Take time out for a short detour and discover the Bauregard Mill at Marans, the last mill in Aunis, which is still in service. See how it works and how it is used to manufacture of organic wheat flour.

The brick factory is also happy to welcome visitors and to help you discover one of the most important economic activities of time gone by - the manufacture of bricks. This is a unique site in the heart of the marsh at Grève -sur-le-Mignon.

The former province of Auris has La Rochelle as its capital.

This former province was the smallest in France and its capital was the city of La Rochelle. Rochefort, Surgères and Marans completed the list of cities in the French historical and cultural region. Aunis disappeared in 1790 during the creation of the departments, which ended the provinces.
