Discover the Hermione, the frigate of freedom

The frigate Hermione, a fascinating spectacle for all ages!

At the heart of the Arsenal of Rochefort, close to the Corderie Royale, lies the Hermione, a legendary three-masted ship from the18th century, which is more than 65m long and is the largest replica of a traditional ship ever built in France.

Visit the interior of the vessel, see its various bridges, equipment and learn about the daily life of the crew.

The reconstruction of the Hermione, a ship originally built between 1778 and 1779, is an authentic tribute to Lafayette which makes it possible to relive a great adventure of solidarity among people and is a testament to the history between France and the United States of America.

In July 1997, the Hermione-La Fayette Association embarked on a mission to create an exact replica of the frigate Hermione, the 34-gun French warship that allowed La Fayette to join the American insurgents fighting for their independence in 1780.

2015 - departure on an extraordinary adventure to America, in the footsteps of Lafayette

Founded in 2011 under the auspices of the Heritage Foundation, the Hermione Foundation is chaired by Erik ORSENNA, a writer and member of the French Academy.

The Hermione Foundation aims to organize a trip to America in the frigate – following in the footsteps of Lafayette. The expedition will take place between April and August 2015.
