The Charente-Maritime Islands

Oléron, Ré, Aix and Madame. Four islands landscapes so different, proud of their culture and their history, but with a common point: the feeling of being elsewhere, outside of time passing.

The Charente-Maritime offers unforgettable island getaways, all beauty in the heart of the Charentais Archipelago.

Let's start with the biggest, "Oléron light" second French island by area.

The Oléron island will seduce you with its diversity: a wild unspoiled nature, beautiful sandy beaches, a major historical heritage (in the image of the Citadel of the Château d'Oléron, Fort Boyard or the Lighthouse of Chassiron) and a unique culture. The Oléron island is also known for its oysters "Marennes-Oléron" to taste without moderation. Sports, the island will charm sports enthusiasts as well as walkers or cyclists through its maritime pine forests or old salt marshes.

Change of scenery and head north, off La Rochelle, to discover "Ré la blanche".

Ré Island holds its famous light that emerges from the ten villages that compose it: In any beauty, Ars and La Flotte are perfect examples. A passage on the old port of Saint Martin de Ré, classified as a World Heritage Site is a must. But Re also captivate you for its long sandy beaches, salt marshes and colors. For cycling fans, the many bike trails incite the discovery of the treasures of the island at your own pace. More than a piece of land, Ré is a state of mind.

Smaller but not antiquated charm, Aix Island is primarily known for prestigious guests who stayed Napoleon Bonaparte.

But Aix summarize the Emperor would be a mistake as the island will charm you with its remarkable landscapes, hidden coves and soul so special. Time stopped on the island of Aix for your enjoyment.

Let's finish our tour through the tiny Isle Madame.

At the entrance of the estuary of the Charente, accessible on foot at low tide from Port des Barques by "La Passe aux Boeufs." Wild and atypical, Mrs worth the trip!
